At this time of the year there are certain preventative maintenance procedures that will help protect your investment during times of longer storage or winterization. The following maintenance tips will allow you to ride on those occasional nice days in the winter and also give you a more dependable ride next season:
Clean and inspect the vehicle
Polish all painted surfaces and chrome
Slow charge the battery with a Battery Tender
Stabilize the fuel in the gas tank
Drain the carburetor and fuel lines
Lube and adjust cables
Spray corrosion protectant on engine components
Check and adjust tire pressure
Cover the vehicle properly Note: Your riding style, riding conditions and service intervals will dictate how much effort will be required for the above tasks. In addition, your vehicle may need the following (check your owner’s manual):
Compression Check
Check steering head bearings
Check Exhaust valves
Check and lubricate chassis/suspension We do recommend that you have an authorized dealer perform the winterization procedures so that any additional services recommended by the manufacturer can be taken care of at that time. And, as an added incentive, we will offer FREE DELIVERY back to your storage area if we perform the winterization. (Local service area only.) Also, this is a great time for a new set of tires, tune-up, performance upgrade or to install some of the accessories you’ve been eyeing all season long. Call for an appointment and mention our “Winter Service Program” for savings on labor costs. Note: When spring rolls around or you have a nice day for a ride, you'll need to basically reverse the steps:
Re-connect the battery.
Check the oil and tire pressure.
Turn the fuel ON, and prime the engine and start it. This might be tough, so have a little patience. Don't race the engine, because the oil has been sitting down in the bottom all this time and the top end is pretty dry. Give it some time and adjust the choke as required. Also, don’t worry about the riding your bike with stabilizer in the gas. It is good for it! |
